It is the purpose of the African-American Alliance for Gay & Lesbian Education, a student organization at Johnson C. Smith University, to educate the African-American community and the community at large on issues facing the African-American Gays and Lesbians including, issues relating to HIV and AIDS.

As the African-American Alliance for Gay & Lesbian Education, our objective is clear.

Our objective is to not only challenge individuals to be totally open and to invite diversity in, but to also educate and go beyond superficial “sensitivity training” and attain true changes in people’s attitudes and behaviors about cultural and sexual differences.

In keeping with our objective we have, in conjunction with the Human Rights Campaign, planned a panel discussion that explores these issues.  Our objective in this discussion is:

To further open the lines of communication within the African-American community and the community at large on issues concerning the health, sexuality and acceptance of the African-American GLBT community for the purpose of continuing a dialog of education and ultimately leading to understanding and attaining true changes in people’s attitudes and behaviors about cultural and sexual differences.

The panel discussion will be held April 6, 2002 on the campus of Johnson C. Smith University.

I believe that knowledge is power, and once you know, you are, for that knowledge/power, responsible.  This effort is an attempt to replace the responsibility back on the individuals where responsibility belongs.

You can help the African-American Alliance for Gay & Lesbian Education by providing funds or by donating goods and services. Your support at this point is not only necessary, but also essential to the education of individuals about issues and a disease that claims lives every day.

Thank you in advance for your support.

 Sincerely,

Jonathan Perry
